Hi Reader!

I'm so excited to share that the next session of Pattern Camp is coming up next weekend, April 12-13th, and registration is now officially open! πŸŽ‰

Not only is registration open, but there's a special $247 earlybird registration price today and tomorrow. Yeehaw! The price will increase to $347 on Saturday, April 5th.

Get all the course details right here!

I fell in love with Adobe Illustrator nearly 2 decades ago, and it's my absolute favorite design program. Faaaaaavorite! I've designed hundreds upon hundreds of patterns in Illustrator and have tons of tips and tricks to share about working in Illustrator and about design patterns.

Pattern Camp is an immersive online course that happens over the course of one focused weekend – it's where creative learning meets fast-paced fun, and your pattern design dreams start to come to fruition. FAST!

I know learning a new computer program and new skills can feel intimidating, but in Pattern Camp I'll be holding your hand and walking you through everything step by step from the very beginning. At the end of the course you'll emerge with the skills (and confidence!) to start creating your own repeat patterns in Illustrator. And it just might happen faster than you think possible! (I see it happen during every single time I host a live Pattern Camp weekend – students surprise themselves with how much they can learn in a short amount of time. This could be you!)

If 2 full days of lessons over a weekend just doesn't jive with your schedule, that's ok! You don't have to be there live. All the lessons are pre-recorded, and the live check-ins are recorded and replays available. You won't miss a thing.

You can work through the lessons at your own pace – the course is easily adaptable to fit your schedule, your lifestyle, and the time you have available.

You'll have ongoing access to the lessons, so whether you work through the lessons in 2 days or 30 or 365, you'll have plenty of time to practice and to get your questions answered in our private Pattern Camp community. You'll be able to interact with other Pattern Campers, make friends, and share your designs and questions when it's convenient for you.

I'll be on-hand live and in real time for the entire weekend, answering questions as they come up – to help you keep moving forward instead of getting stuck, frustrated, and giving up. (We've all been there, am I right?)

By the end of Pattern Camp, you’ll:

πŸ”₯ Turn your simple doodles into usable, editable designs

πŸ”₯ Know how to create a variety of types of digital repeating patterns

πŸ”₯ Have the confidence and skills to know how to use Adobe Illustrator successfully and efficiently

πŸ”₯ Be part of a supportive, creative community

πŸ”₯ Be officially obsessed with designing patterns!

Quick details:

  • Pattern Camp is Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13th.
  • Registration is open until Friday April 11th.
  • We're having a live welcome party on Friday night, April 11th, on Zoom!
  • Sign up now at the $247 earlybird price (it'll increase to $347 on Saturday)

There's also a bonus Illustrator Primer video waiting for you in the classroom if you're new to the program and want to get a head start, along with a Procreate Primer video for the iPad and some other helpful resources. You can also join the community and start getting to know people before we begin. (Because creative friends are the best kind of friends!)

If surface pattern design is calling to you, now's the time to listen and to start moving toward making your creative dreams come true.
There's never a "perfect time" for it, where all your obligations and to dos are taken care of, you know? You just have to MAKE the time and say YES to your creativity, amidst all the other life stuff. Because it's important. It matters. Listen to the call!

A student in my last Pattern Camp class said "This feeling of accomplishment is no joke! So exciting!" and I couldn't agree more. Every time I test a pattern I've made and it works and repeats seamlessly, I get the same rush of excitement now as I did when I first learned to design repeats almost 20 years ago. I want that for you, too!!

If this feels like a fit for you, I hope you'll join me! It's going to be the most awesome weekend filled with color, pattern, laughter, learning, and FUN. I'd love to have you there!

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING:

AMAZING!!! Cannot thank Jess enough for her ability to make the student feel listened to and valued. Easy to understand instructions. Broken down into very manageable sections with each follow on section building on the last. – Elena B
Before I took Pattern Camp, I was at a loss as to how to move forward in Adobe Illustrator. I couldn't seem to get past the bumps I was encountering along the way, making it difficult to stay motivated. This course is well worth the time and effort it takes to learn how to make a pattern design, and you meet so many wonderful people along the way. The community of everyone involved really provides the encouragement I needed to help me achieve my goals. – Kim L
"I took Pattern Camp once before, and in addition to Jess’s phenomenal teaching skills, it is a PARTY. Connections and fun (as well as hard work, which I am so ready for) await!" – Affra G
I loved Camp so much I signed on for the encore. Can’t wait to get back to Illustrator tomorrow. I have been so intimidated by Illustrator for so long, which has held me back from moving toward my goals. But you made it so understandable and accessible the last two days that I cannot wait to get back at it in the morning. I spent the evening drawing more motifs because I can now see patterns in my mind that need to get out and onto some surfaces! – Tammy G
"Exactly the class I was looking for, the presentation is so clear and made a daunting process easily understandable." – Jill P
"I'm a beginner in Illustrator and I was able to make my first pattern design. Thanks!!" – Paola L
"I am so surprised by all the possibilities that are coming out of those initial sketches! Thank you for teaching us this truly magical process!" – Jen W

Hi Reader, It's Spring Break for my kids this week, and we're staying put in Portland this year since we're going on a big adventure to England this summer (my little family of three's first international trip!). which means I'm doing the ultimate juggling act right now, trying to work with 2 kids here 24/7 and also make time for fun stuff so they're not just sitting around in front of screens. Basically I'm bouncing between things like zoom meetings to going to the pool to hosting live...

Hi Reader, Last week I told you about a super special collaboration I've been working on with my friend Sarah Watts, and today I'm excited to share that registration is OPEN for The Variety Show: Surface Pattern Design Edition! The Variety Show is a weeklong workshop – coming up March 31st–April 4th – all about surface pattern design. Sarah and I are hosting it together, and we’ll be joined by a couple of very amazing special guests β€” artists Jen Hewett and Peggy Dean. Yes! And, we’ll have...

I turned the drawing I shared in my email last week into a repeating pattern! Hey Reader, Happy Tuesday! Today I've got pattern design on the brain, and it's always a good day when I get to focus on patterns because making them is pretty much my favorite creative thing ever. :) I'm working on designing a new fabric collection right now, which has been super fun but I've also felt a bit rusty. I don't like feeling rusty, but I know by now after being a working artist for so many years that the...
